The Violet Town and District Community Plan

The Violet Town and District community has a long and strong history of planning for the future and bringing positive change. Since the amalgamation of the Violet Town Shire Council into Strathbogie Shire Council in 1994 there has been an evolution of community groups and processes to lead the direction of Violet Town and District. A significant step was the first Community Opportunity Workshop held in 2000. This first workshop led to a range of initiatives, projects and actions which when reviewed after five years were found to have achieved almost all its aims.

The experience and success of the 2002 workshop and its flow-on effects gave confidence when deciding to hold a Community Opportunity Workshop in February 2007. The success of the Anti Toxic Dump Campaign also provided great confidence in community processes.

The Violet Town and District Community Plan was established in the months following the Community Opportunity Workshop. At the workshop the community suggested seventy-six different ideas and initiatives as the basis for the new community plan.

Following the February 2007 session, members of the VTAG grouped all of the suggestions into ten broad themes. Ten local people took on the role as facilitators for each of these themes. Small group meetings to develop the ideas within each theme were publicly advertised, and took place.

The information set out in the Ten Key Themes in this Plan mostly comes from the work done by those small groups, and especially by the Theme facilitators in writing it up. A higher resolution pdf is available ...
