Peak Oil what it's all about

Could we have prepared better for the effects of climate change? How prepared will we be for the impact of Peak Oil?

VTAG is screening a dvd entitled "The Power of Community - How Cuba survived Peak Oil" and organised a 'meet the candidates' night to discuss this issue.

Cut off from trade by the United States, in 1993 Cuba lost its critical oil imports from the Soviet Union almost overnight. The country had to learn to do without it, and today has lessons for the rest of the world about how it can be done.

Providing answers for those of us confronting Peak Oil for the first time, this film shows how organic farming, decentralisation and community all contribute to the solution. It also indicates that we may be healthier, happier and wiser for the effort.

As a State Election Special, the lower house candidates for our seat of Benalla are all invited, to speak briefly on their ideas of how we might prepare for the challenges of Peak Oil.

When: THURSDAY 2 NOVEMBER, 7.30PM
Where: Supper Room, Violet Town Community Centre
Cost: gold coin donation

"The Power of Community - How Cuba survived Peak Oil"

A major portion of Cuba's oil use - when they could still get it prior to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1993 - went towards agriculture [food production].

When the country had to feed itself with very little access to oil, it did so by doing just the sort of things we seedsavers do or have been interested in: home food production; urban food gardens; organic agriculture; community supported agriculture.

"It is a really interesting and well made 55min dvd" - David Arnold
