School sites plaque unveiling and book launch
What a day! This celebration was beyond the wildest dreams of the committee that formed 12 months ago.
When we began, we wanted to unveil a plaque on the Upotipotpon School and write a brief history. It very quickly became four schools on six sites and the writing of a history of all four schools. The culmination of the work of the committee was Sunday 27 May.
The convoy of cars around the six sites was amazing. Others joined along the way and most came back to Violet Town for the book launch and catch up with old friends! It was estimated that over 200 people came back to the hall, which was buzzing, and the food unbelievable.
The book, District Schools, was launched by Robyn Machin our local councillor.
Stuart Brain represented the Department of Education.
Frank McMahon was kept busy all day with book sales, and the team of helpers in the kitchen did a wonderful job, even whipped up a pot of soup while the rest were out on the tour.
The unveiling day was very much a team effort by the whole committee. The research for the book and writing, the finding of photos, the tracking down of old class mates and teachers, sketches for the plaques, the putting up the plaques, setting up the hall and the many other jobs were all undertaken by the committee and lots of people who just jumped in and helped - a big thank you to everyone.
There are many people still talking about it and book sales since the day have also been brisk.
The book has sold out (200 copies) but as the Village Voice goes to print we have ordered another 50 copies.
Thanks to Mal and Trish for selling the books for us at the supermarket and as soon as we get more they will be available there or through VTAG for $15 each, plus postage if you want it sent.
Finally we must say a huge thank you to Val Russell and Doris Mullavey who got this group started, well done everyone.
