Give Kangaroos a brake - slow down and be aware
Strathbogie Shire Council would like to warn motorists of the increased risk of collision with wildlife, especially kangaroos, at this time of year.
Due to the drought, kangaroos and other wildlife are moving onto roadsides in search of food and for green pick after small showers.
Dusk and dawn are the times of greatest risks. A collision between a kangaroo and a vehicle invariably results in a painful death for the animal, considerable damage to the vehicle and risk of injury to the vehicle occupants.
What can you do?
- reduce your speed in "known" kangaroo hot spots;
- slow down further if you see a kangaroo on or beside the road;
- Avoid 'tunnel vision' be aware of what is on the road and roadside ahead.
A 24 hour a day wildlife connect telephone service is available through RACV's 13 11 11 number for any Victorian motorist who hits or encounters injured wildlife on the road. It offers an easily recalled number and connects motorists by phone to volunteer wildlife carer networks.
