Barmaids comes to Violet Town
Arts Violet Town Inc. and Fishladder Theatre present 'Barmaids' a play by Katherine Thomson.
"The old proverb still rings true - it's the barmaid brings in the customers. And the emptiest pub in this town is the most renovated and fancied-up and no one wants to drink there... You find an older barmaid today, you find someone hanging onto her job like her life depended on it..."
The accountants are taking over the pub and renovating it, bringing in karaoke and who knows what else. Nancy and Val, no nonsense but with hearts of gold, pour the beers and prop up the regulars.
Now there's talk that the new manager's going to bring in young girls in 'skimpies' for the new-look happy hour. What's an old-fashioned barmaid to do?
Katherine Thomson's wonderful play goes to the heart of two women serving the drinks and what they think is worth fighting for.
Razor-sharp, full of earthy humour and spot-on observations, 'Barmaids' is an acclaimed tour-de-force from one of Australia's most interesting playwrights.
