Grants available to preserve war memorials
Local ex-service organisations, councils, schools and community groups can apply for grants of up to $10,000 to preserve, restore and enhance local war memorials and honor rolls.
The State Government is offering the funding via its Restoring Community War Memorials Grants Program.
Examples of projects which could be funded include:-
- Repairs to broken statues that form part of a memorial
- Repairs to barriers and fences which surround and protect a memorial
- The rectification of sinking foundations
- Re - lettering of honor rolls
- Installation of additional plaques on existing memorials or additional names on existing honor rolls
- Installation of explanatory walls (a written explanation that provides historical context about the memorial and its place in the community)
- Landscaping (including the installation of seating and paving and the planting of trees) around the commemorative site
- The installation of hand rails at the commemorative site
- Relocation of a memorial to its original position
"The grants aim to ensure that Victoria's war memorials and honor rolls remain places of community pride and respect for future generations. War memorials are an important symbol of the respect we pay those who have served our nation," Strathbogie Shire Council Mayor, Cr Gregory Carlson said this week.
