David Holmgren presents in Violet Town

International speaker and co-founder of permaculture, David Holmgren, will give a presentation at The Parish in Violet Town on Saturday 24th February, 7.30pm. He will present on the topic of "Rural Community Adaptation to Energy Descent".

'Peak Oil' and 'Energy Descent' are the other side of the same coin as climate change. Peak Oil and Climate Change are the 'hydrocarbon twins'.

We have burned so much fossil fuel over the last 150 years that we have changed and are changing the climate. And we have pumped so much fossil fuel [oil] from the ground in the last 150 years that from now on the rate of oil "production" will decline.

Global oil production reaches its historic peak right about now, in 2007. Oil production follows a bell shaped curve, and we are at the beginning of a period of global energy descent.

At present fossil fuel energy [oil, coal and gas] is an essential and indispensable part of agriculture, food and services distribution, housing, industry, etc. How can we continue to provide for people in a future of greatly reduced energy availability?

David Holmgren's presentation on how we can creatively adapt to the challenges of energy descent will be stimulating, challenging, practical and positive. Through practical projects and teaching by personal example, David Holmgren and other permaculturists have demonstrated that a sustainable lifestyle is a realistic, attractive and powerful alternative to dependent consumerism.

In 2006 David Holmgren toured capital cities of Australia with Richard Heinberg, US peak oil author, giving their complementary presentations. More information on this tour, and David Holmgren's last international teaching tour in 2005, is available on www.holmgren.com.au . He leaves for another six month international tour in April.
