Council erects a standpipe.

The towns of Euroa and Violet Town in Strathbogie Shire will go on to Stage 4 water restrictions as of midnight Thursday 1 February 2007 which will unfortunately affect the existing standpipe operation conditions in place.

Water for stock and the domestic standpipes in Euroa and Violet Town to date has been provided as a community service by Goulburn Valley Water (GVW). With stage 4 restrictions being implemented Goulburn Valley Water is unable to provide the water for both the stock and domestic standpipes and the commercial water standpipes in both towns.

After lengthy consultation between Strathbogie Shire Council and Goulburn Valley Water, GVW has undertaken to cart additional water by road to the Euroa and Violet Town storages to allow the standpipes to remain open. The cost of water at all standpipes unfortunately will have to increase to pay for the transport. The new rate will be $15 per 1000 litres (or 1.5 cents per litre). This rate will apply to both the commercial and stock and domestic standpipes in both Euroa and Violet Town.

Mayor of Strathbogie Shire Council, Gregory Carlson said, "Council regrets the need to go to this system but in the interests of providing some water for the community; saw it as the best possible option. The cost of water at all standpipes unfortunately will now have to be charged to pay for the transport of the water. On a positive note, this same situation has been working well in Mansfield for the last four weeks and Council hopes that it will be the same in Strathbogie Shire."

With the new restrictions, the management of the Euroa stock and domestic standpipe will change to be the same as the Violet Town stock and domestic standpipe.

A Council employee will man the standpipe for three and a half hours a day from 7.30 am to 11.00 am, Monday to Friday. Users of the stand pipe can go straight to the standpipe where they can draw up to 3,000 litres a day and pay the Council employee for the water. In a similar fashion, users of the Violet Town standpipe can pay the Council employee for water drawn. Currently this is the same system that has been in place in Violet Town since early January and the arrangement now seems to be working well.

Billing will commence Tuesday February 2007.
