FACT SHEET - standpipes

Strathbogie Shire Council has four stock and domestic standpipes throughout the shire located at the following locations:

In addition there are two standpipes in Violet Town and Euroa which are used by commercial water carters.

When can I access the standpipes?

The Violet Town and Euroa standpipes can be accessed Monday to Friday from 7.30 am to 11 am. The Nagambie standpipe can be accessed 24 hrs a day, seven days a week. The Arcadia standpipe can be accessed by ringing Cliff and Elaine Cousins on (03) 5826 7312 to arrange for a key.

How much water can I draw?

A maximum of 3,000 litres per day per person.

How much does the water cost?

Violet Town and Euroa water (provided by Goulburn Valley Water) is being charged at $1.50 per 100 litres. The Nagambie and Arcadia water (provided by Goulburn-Murray Water) remains free.

How do I pay?

A council employee will be manning the Violet Town and Euroa standpipes and the money or a cheque needs to be paid to the council staff member to draw the water.

Who is providing the water for the standpipes?

Water for the Violet Town and Euroa standpipes is provided by Goulburn Valley Water (GVW), Nagambie and Arcadia is provided by Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW). Up until now GVW and GMW are providing the water as a service to the community, there is no obligation for them to provide the water to the stand pipes.

What will happen when Euroa and Violet Town go to stage 4 water restrictions?

Violet Town and Euroa go to stage four water restrictions with effect from midnight 1 Feb 07. Under these restrictions, the Violet Town and Euroa standpipes should close.

However, Council have consulted and worked with Goulburn Valley Water to provide some water at the Violet Town and Euroa standpipes. Goulburn Valley Water has agreed to cart water from Seymour for use at the standpipes on a cost recovery basis. Water drawn from the standpipes will cost $15 per 1000 litres or 1.5 cents a litre from Tuesday 6 Feb 07.

Will you change the hours if the demand is there?

The standpipes will operate from 7.30 to 11 am Monday to Friday. If water users want to vary the times, they should contact Council. If there is sufficient consensus amongst users, the timings can be varied.
