Clean Up Australia Chairman Ian Kiernan AO said that volunteering for just a few hours on 4 March is all that is necessary to make a big difference

Highways and roadsides throughout the area among the most heavily polluted parts of the region and local residents are being urged to take action as part of Clean Up Australia Day 2007.

Clean Up Australia Chairman Ian Kiernan AO said that volunteering for just a few hours on 4 March is all that is necessary to make a big difference and to reduce the threat of rubbish to drivers, passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians.

"Rubbish that ends up on the Hume Freeway represents a major threat to the safety of everyone and anyone on the road, be they drivers, passengers, cyclist or pedestrians," said Mr Kiernan.

"Rubbish can disrupt traffic and can be a physical hazard for cars, bikes, and pedestrians if they are obstructed or entangled."

"In just a few hours, people can help clean up but also contribute to action on climate change by recycling, which means that rubbish does not end up in landfill which creates dangerous greenhouse gas emissions."

"Clean Up Australia Day needs volunteers to register a site and become part of the million people we are calling on to participate on March 4."

Volunteers can register a site at www.cleanup.org.au/register or by calling 1800 CUA DAY (1800 282 329).

"By taking a stand the community can bring about changes that will ensure a healthy environment now and for future generations," Mr Kiernan said.

"Clean Up Australia Day on March 4 is just one of the activities that we are doing throughout the year but it remains one of the simplest, most effective ways for large numbers of Australians to work together and make a difference to their environment in just a few hours."
