IT'S TIME FOR THE NEXT COW
The first Community Opportunity Workshop [COW] in Violet Town was held in November 2000, and has proved to be a huge success. 120 people attended, and a great number of important community projects were put forward and committed to.
It is remarkable how many of the projects that were put forward at that first COW have been achieved. The HREP walking track along the creek was a big one, with so many aspects to it, and there are many others. We now have
- seats with arm rests around the town
- the Living History writers group
- six trains a day stopping here instead of two
- a community bank [GMCU]
- ways to support business and industry [website and Streetlife project]
- an arts council [Arts Violet Town Inc]
- a welcome pack for new residents
- capital development of the Bush Nursing Centre
- renovation of the community centre kitchen
- a Community Health Centre which includes a gym
- childcare facility at the kinder and school
- a thriving and expanded market
- public access computers and internet
- a newly planted Community Forest, which is being watered through the summer.
Some ideas that were put forward and have not yet been achieved are to
- rename all the streets with flower names
- upgrade and develop the swimming pool
- prepare an integrated Violet Town and District Master Plan
- get natural gas connected.
So now it is time to refresh and review our priorities.
The workshop process is for us to brainstorm and pool ideas, and find what commitment there is to these within the community. We need everyone who cares about the future of our town and district to come along and give their ideas.
Tuesday 20 February at the Community Centre, beginning 6.30 pm with a free shared meal put on by VTAG.
