Rail level crossings

One crucial thing that the crash at Kerang has highlighted is the need for road users to be aware of rail level crossings and the terrible impact that a crash with a train can have. Strathbogie Shire has forty three rail level crossings throughout the municipality.
Strathbogie Shire has 21 crossings on the Albury railway line and 22 on the Shepparton line. The maintenance and management of the crossings is a complex matter. David Westphalen, Director Asset Services clarified, "Strathbogie Shire Council for its part undertakes an annual crossing signage audit to ensure compliance with the Australian Standard for road signage."
"We are also responsible for the maintenance of the approach roads to within 2.4m of the 'outside rail'. The maintenance of the actual crossing, and the signage and signaling is the responsibility of the rail authorities."
Of our 43 crossings, 15 are 'active' meaning they have lights and signals. The balance 28, are 'passive', which means they only have warning signs, advising of the level crossing. The Department of Infrastructure, and the rail authorities, with input from Strathbogie Shire Council, is developing a program to upgrade a number of level crossings within the shire, predominantly on the Albury line.
Please drive carefully and be aware of the rail level crossings.
