Violet Town Flood Study Stage 2 - Completed

The public meeting to release and discuss the findings of the Violet Town Flood Study was held on Thursday night. A number of interested people attended the meeting to gain an understanding of the process and a brief outline of what the next steps will be in the Floodplain Management Study.

The purpose of this stage of the overall Study Project was to develop an electronic flood model that represents the movement of flood waters through the township. The flood model will be used to develop flood mitigation options for the township, which will be the focus of Stage 3 of the overall project.

This study and model identifies which buildings are expected to be subject to flooding in a 1 in 100 year flood event, and the estimated depth of flooding. The results of the study are of great value to the community for land use planning and emergency management.

This next stage will require the formation of a Community Consultative Committee to develop and consider the various flood mitigation options. The application for funding of Stage 3 has been submitted to the Federal Government, with the results of the grant application expected late this year.

Strathbogie Shire Council would like to thank the members of the Community Reference Committee for their efforts and their interest in the development of the Study. They were able to bring information to the study that may not have been available otherwise. The community members were: Tom Crocker; Reg Davis; Neil Garrett and; Howard Myers

The Council would also like to thank the efforts and support throughout the project of Guy Tierney of the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority and Steve Muncaster of Water Technology.

Copies of the Violet Town Flood Study Report will be available at the Violet Town Library, and the Strathbogie Shire Council's office in Euroa.
