Landscaping for Victorian Code for Broiler Farms, 2001

The Victorian Code for Broiler Farms was developed to effectively manage the potential environmental, health and amenity impacts of the industry.
There are eight elements for which best practice farm design and operation are defined in the Code:
- Location and size
- Design and construction
- Air quality (odour and dust)
- Noise
- Waste management
- Traffic
- Landscaping
- Management and operations
Landscaping can play an important part in softening the visual impact of broiler farms and assist in reducing their noise impacts.
Element 7, Guideline 2 (E7 G2) "Landscaping" states:
"A requirement to establish a landscape performance bond forms part of the permit approval. The amount of the bond provides an incentive for the broiler farm operator to fully implement the landscape plan and maintain the vegetation during the establishment period. The bond is established to ensure effective implementation of a landscape plan approved by the responsible authority. This plan includes a reasonably detailed estimate of the quantity and type of materials, watering equipment, plants and other inputs required".
Mayor of Strathbogie Shire Council, Gregory Carlson said, "In order to minimise the potential for off-site impacts from broiler farms, Council has resolved to apply the requirements from Element 7, Guideline 2, in relation to landscaping bonds, on any future planning permits for broiler farms in the Shire of Strathbogie."
