The Sambell Oration is a public talk held each year in Melbourne.
Named after former Brotherhood Director Archbishop Geoffrey Sambell, the event reflects his vision for social justice and provides a forum for community leaders to express their views.
The 2008 Oration will focus on the impacts of climate change on low-income Australians, and will be presented by Professor Ross Garnaut.
Professor Ross Garnaut is a Distinguished Professor of the Australian National University as well as both a Professorial Fellow (Faculty of Economics and Commerce) and a Vice- Chancellor’s Fellow at the University of Melbourne.
He is currently Chairman of a number of international companies and research organisations, including the International Food Policy Research Institute.
Professor Garnaut is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences of Australia and Honorary Professor of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
In April 2007, Professor Garnaut was commissioned by the Australian States and Territories, and subsequently the Commonwealth Government, to undertake a review examining the impact of climate change on the Australian economy and potential medium to long-term policies to ameliorate these.
