On 11 May 2009 at 7.00pm in the Community Complex Jacques Boulet an inspirational speaker and founder of borderlands will be coming to Violet Town. Jacques early inspiration came from living with Romani and Kenyan communities and this shaped his lifelong university teaching of social work, social research and community development in Belgium, Germany, USA and Australia.
He was the former Associate Professor RMIT Social Work and his PhD dissertation about structure/agency theoretical underpinning for community development. He has ongoing networks with Latino, European, Indian Sub Continent and Chinese university research centres as well as facilitating social work curriculum development in Hong Kong and India.
His vision is for a suburban university to continue the mission of transformative education eclipsed by Australia’s neo-liberal Cultural Revolution.
Jacques is also one of the founders of borderlands in Melbourne, a free thinking Independent network for holistic* community activism, sustainability and action research.
"I heard Jacques speak last year as part of my studies. I found him to be informative, hopeful and inspirational, his understanding of the history of community development along with his real life experiences gave real insight into another picture of community development and also for me shed some light on the frustrations we sometimes face as a community."
"I recommend that anyone who is interested in the history of community development, the opportunity and stumbling blocks to create real change and also the managing and sustainable growth of volunteers should come along and hear Jacques speak." Annette Walton
