CFA Remind Households to check Smoke Alarms regularly

CFA in conjunction with local fire brigades would like to remind people to check their homes' smoke alarms are in working order. Working smoke alarms are a critical household safety device.

Research has shown that one in five Australians have experienced a fire in their homes, with 30 per cent of these starting in the kitchen during cooking and a further 15 per cent the result of electrical faults.

CFA Community Safety Manager, John Boal said "Working smoke alarms save lives." They provide an early warning of a fire, allowing you and your family to escape the fire safely or to attack it. "Unfortunately, a number of household fires still cause fatalities and injuries each year because people could not escape quickly enough" Mr Boal said.

In rental properties owners are responsible for providing smoke alarms. It is the tenants' responsibility to regularly check and maintain the smoke alarms.

Smoke alarms must be in good working order, and that means testing them weekly, cleaning them monthly and changing the batteries once a year. If there's no sound from your smoke alarm, there's no warning.
