Extension of Funding for Key Drought Support Roles

Strathbogie Shire Council successfully obtained funding from the Department of Planning and Community Development for a full-time Drought Coordinator in 2008. The position commenced on 21 April 2008 and funding ceases 30 June 2009.

At the March Council meeting, Strathbogie Shire Council agreed to write to a range of politicians and influential groups to try an affect an extension of the funding for a Drought Coordinator until at least June 2010.

The municipalities within the Hume catchment are expected to lobby hard for continuing funding for this important role. At a recent meeting of Mayors and CEO's of the Hume region Local Governments it was agreed to write letters seeking a commitment for an ongoing drought response and funding for drought officers.

The Drought Coordinator position was one of several specifically funded roles designed to support communities in a range of ways through this severe and prolonged drought.

Mayor of Strathbogie Shire Council, Howard Myers said, "The Drought Coordinator was made available to enable better coordination and communication across all levels of government, businesses and voluntary organisations. In Strathbogie, this has resulted in the delivery of an extended outreach service to our community as well as better coordination and communication across the various service providers and levels of government operating in the region."

A range of local activities have been provided to increase awareness of available support services and engage members of the community. Networking activities have been significant throughout the period and enhanced the council's ability to deliver services.

Outgoing Drought Coordinator, Caroline Harlow said, "Feedback direct from members of the community is consistent - outreach is important, valuable and needs to continue."

Drought continues across the shire and despite good rainfall in some areas, the recent extension of Exceptional Circumstances to the end of March 2010 reflects the prevailing conditions. Combined with the current economic climate, the need for a fully-funded role that supports the community, builds and strengthens resilience and continues to offer coordination of services is essential.
