Locusts coming earlier than forecast
Locust hatchings are expected to occur in Victoria 10 days earlier than previously forecast, based on projected forecasts from the Australian Plague Locust Commission.
This is a timely reminder to farmers to start ordering locust-spraying chemicals which are being 100 per cent rebated by the state government, to tackle the impending spring locust plague.
Experts are predicting that we could be facing the worst locust plague in 75 years.
Mayor of Strathbogie Shire Council Howard Myers reminded residents to be aware of the earlier projected forecast for hatchings. "It is vital that landholders are equipped and ready to treat locusts after they hatch as there is a relatively short times span of about two weeks when immature hoppers are most vulnerable to chemical spraying," he said.
Farmers should be ordering locust-spraying chemicals now as chemical manufacturers in some cases need significant lead-time in order to ensure they have sufficient stocks available and are able to meet demand.
