Violet Town celebrates Australia Day
As in years past, Violet Town residents were out in force to celebrate Australia Day.
A typical 'Aussie' BBQ was cooked up by the Lions Club and served by a band of willing volunteers organised by stalwart Dot Rae, under the verandah of the Community House.
The Euroa Brass Band played a selection of pieces to entertain everyone while they breakfasted on the lawn and for those lucky enough, under the trees.
New entertainment, new to Australia Day that is, was provided the String Busters Ukelele Group who accompanied their playing with a collation of traditional Australian songs.
The official part of the celebration commenced with Pat Glynn, chair of VTAG, calling for the raising of the flag, the singing of the National Anthem, and the Affirmation.
He then introduced our Australia Day Ambassador, Judith Robbins, from East Gippsland. Judith and her husband Peter provide a respite house on their farm to give families who have a child with a life threatening illness, a free holiday. Read Judith's full speech.
Brad Connell representing Woolworth Supermarket in Benalla explained how his company puts money back into the community and funds the Australia Day Ambassador scheme and presented a pin to Judtith Robbins.
Announcing the recipients of Citizen of the Year awards, Pat Glynn had pleasure in calling Michael McGlaughlin to receive Citizen of the Year award for his untiring work for the community. Read more ...
Event of the Year Award went to the Violet Town 'Choir of Hard Knocks' concert held in February 2009. Robbie Rae accepted the award on behalf of the organising group, explaining how successful the whole event had been. Read more ...
In conclusion Pat Glynn thanked all who provided their time and effort in making the day the success it was, including the band, the Lions club, the breakfast team led by Dot Rae, the Ambassador and of course those who joined in the celebrations.
