Australia Day 2012
Another great day dawned for Violet Town, with the sun streaming in over the trees on those who arrived for breakfast early. It wasn't long of course before it heated up considerably forcing people to head for the shade.
Once again the Violet Town Lions Club rapidly produced an excellent, traditional style breakfast of fried eggs, bacon, sausages and tomatoes. The Australia Day Committee organised fruit juices, cereal, coffee and scones to complete the breakfast - great breakfast and thank you to all who worked so hard in front and behind the scenes.
To get the proceedings started the Strathbogie Shire Town Crier, James Taylor, called the audience to order and then MC for the day, Pat Glynn, welcomed all and especially the Australia Day Ambassador, Victoria Funnell.
While the audience continued with their breakfast, the Euroa Citizen's Band and the Stringbusters entertained with music and song.
Long time resident of the district, Alex Walker, raised the flag and then Pat Glynn introduced Manager Craig Kelly of Benalla representing the Ambassador program's official sponsor, Woolworths, who explained how his company puts money back into the community and funds the Australia Day Ambassador scheme.
Vici Funnell is the Chief Executive Officer of Make-A-Wish Foundation Australia and has many inspiring stories of courageous children and their families and the great volunteers who grant the children's' wishes.
Vici said how important volunteers are to the Make-a-Wish Foundation and to all communities and told the story of how one child was granted his wish. Read more
Vici was invited to then assist in presenting the Violet Town Awards to the winners of starting with the Violet Town Community Event of the Year this year awarded to the Honeysuckle Creek Festival. Helen Keighery accepted the award on behalf of the organiser of the festival, Sue Paton, who was not available.

An important part of Australia Day is the swearing in of new citizens and Strathbogie Shire residents this year were pleased to learn that Penelope Gleadhow was to become an Australian Citizen. Cr Williams took much pleasure in conducting the ceremony ending the Euroa Citizens Band playing the National Anthem.
As in past years, the Opportunity Shop announced the distribution of money to Violet Town and District Not-for-Profit organisations. Julie Ryan called on those representing the organisations to accept the cheques totalling $12,000. Follow the link for a full list of the distribution
